Happy New Year! Isn’t it hard to believe the calendar already shows 2015?
A few days ago my husband and I were watching the first Back to the Future movie. At the end of the movie Doc comes back to their time – 1985 – in the DeLorean to take Marty and Jennifer back 30 years into the future, which would place them in the year 2015. When I was a teenager watching this in the movie theater in 1985 I remember thinking, “Wow, 30 years seems like an eternity!” But 30 years later and… well, here we are. Time really does fly by – just not in a DeLorean. 🙂
So to kick off 2015 I have come up with a very simple yet elegant winter tablescape. Compared to the busy-ness of December, nothing much goes on in January. Yes, January is absolutely frigid with temps in the single digits, long grey days and snow everywhere. But ya know, winter does still have a beauty all its own. So I gazed out my window and took note of what I saw. With the winter landscape as my inspiration, I used white, grey, silver, crystal, and wood to pull this tablescape together. I think it nicely captures the essence of winter!
Remember: your table does not have to be over-the-top to be enjoyable or memorable. It’s very easy to get caught up in all the preparations so that you lose focus on the “why” and the “who” you are preparing for. The emphasis should always be on spending time with your family or your “comp’ny” (as we call it in the South) 🙂 Yes, people will remember bits and pieces of your tablescape; but what really makes an impact on them (that is not soon forgotten) is the time you spend together in conversation. So let’s start off the New Year with elegance and simplicity, not stress and strain. Let’s make it a point to slow down and enjoy our time with family and friends. Let conversation be the hit of our tables.
