Happy Valentines Day everyone! I thought I would share a little history behind this wonderful day that is filled with love. I have taken slight liberties here. :0)
Who was Saint Valentine is the question. The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine and yep you guessed it, they were all martyred. Poor people but I guess that is how you get to be a saint. Not a real win win situation if you ask me. On to our story.
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. One rainy gloomy day Emperor Claudius II woke up on the wrong side of the bed. He decided that single men made better soldiers for his army because they didn’t have the love of their life patiently awaiting there arrival back home, so he outlawed marriage. Can you believe that!
Well luckily for everyone there was a man filled with love named Valentine. He thought this was just ridiculous and defied Claudius law. Valentine performed marriages for young lovers in secret. Can you keep his secret? Remember this has to be hush hush.
Well I guess someone slipped and told on poor Valentine because Mr. Claudius found out about Valentine’s actions and yep you guessed it – put poor Valentine to death. So so sad! All the man wanted to do was spread love.
So there ya have it. A man with good intensions from long ago started this day we call Valentines Day. Just as Saint Valentine, see if you can spread a little love to someone today.
Hope you enjoy my Valentines tablescape I put together for my family. Can’t you feel the love? :o)
